MINION

It does your bidding and reports back what it sees.

View and control your RED camera wirelessly from your tablet or smart phone. Stream low-latency HD video straight to a REDLINK compatible app to give your Director of Photography the power to check and set exposure from a tablet or stream to a web browser to help your grip clear that C-Stand from frame. What will you do with your own personal Minion?

Minion sees through a single HDMI-D input, is powered by one LEMO 2-pin connector and draws approximately 2.5 watts of power. Minion talks to the camera through RED's gigabit LEMO connector. Connect all three, power it up and you're ready to receive streaming video on all compatible devices.

Bring your own Wi-Fi or rely on Minion to create an Access Point for you. The choice is yours. Minion sports an upgradeable 802.11 antenna. Based on PCI-E Mini technology Minion can grow as new communication protocols are released.

Finally, measuring just 4" tall, 2.5" wide, and 2" deep, Minion is at home on even the most compact rigs. Minion was born to get you out of the way and it does exactly the same.

Let the “smart” in smartphone add intelligence to your camera.

Minion will ship with a free application to get you started but you can use Minion with your existing REDLINK applications while waiting for video support to be added. And with Minion's straight forward streaming protocol the wait shouldn't be long.

However, while it might be easy to add video to a control app, the real power of Minion will become evident when developers start taking advantage of access to a live video stream. Not happy with the auto exposure algorithms available today? Write your own. How about facial tracking driven exposure? There are existing APIs that developers could use to add that. From custom focus assist and false color modes to LUTs and waveforms. Developers are no longer limited to rearranging dials and buttons--they can now present real-time video data in new and ever more powerful ways.

No locked doors.

Minion is built on commodity and open source technology. While it will hopefully serve your needs right out of the box, we don't want to artificially restrict what you can do with a device like Minion. Minion runs on an OpenEmbedded/Yocto distribution built specifically for its Freescale I.MX6 foundation. While it's a very capable video streaming device it's only one arbitrary application of millions. Recognizing Minion's potential and respecting the debt owed to the hacker community at large, we will not be imposing any restrictions on how you use Minion. Now, we obviously won't fix your Minion for you if you flash the ROM and choose to run Android or Windows 10 IOT, we also won't lock you out from doing so either. Minion was built to do  YOUR bidding not ours. But if you do unlock some new cool capability, please share it with all of us so that Minion's powers will grow. We built Minion because it was something that we needed. We look forward to seeing Minion grow to fit your needs as well.
